GOAL 3 Expands into Maternal Health with Dutch Government Contract for IMPALA Developments

GOAL 3 recently won two contracts from the Dutch Government to develop and expand the use of IMPALA for maternal care.

The contracts come following a period of high-demand for improved maternal functionality in IMPALA by hospitals in these settings. With IMPALA already active in 15+ maternal wards, these projects aim to expand our monitoring and decision support technology to better meet the specific needs of maternal care.

The first project called IMPALA-Mater will be carried out in Ethiopia to improve maternal early recognition and response of patient deterioration. The contract will fund the development of maternal observation dashboards and context-aware decision support (including maternal early warning score, shock index and potential AI support) to bring earlier recognition and treatment of conditions like post-partum hemorrhaging, sepsis and hypertensive disorders. The project will focus on exploring the feasibility, acceptance and effectiveness of such an intervention in the Ethiopian context, collaborating with local professional organizations, and end-users, to co-design the solution for the context.

The second project called IMPALA-Trace will combine maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate, contraction monitoring, and a digital labour care workflow into one integrated system designed for resource-constrained maternity settings. By creating an overview of both mother and fetus, the project aims to support earlier recognition of complications while reducing fragmented monitoring and documentation workflows for healthcare workers. This project will likely be piloted in Kenya in collaboration with established INGOs and local professional associations.

Both projects are expected to start in the next few months and will last approximately 6 months until the end of 2026. We are delighted to further develop IMPALA to support not only newborns and children, but also mothers, further improving quality of care for everyone who needs it most.
